Diglipur

Diglipur Island covering around 884sq km/553sq miles is a large island in the North Andaman housing lush green tropical forests, virgin beaches and rare attractions. The population of this Island is primarily made up of people from Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Cultivation and Fisheries are the two primary occupations of people in this island.

Diglipur Island is 330km by road and morning bus services are available between Port Blair and Diglipur. There are three refreshing breaks during the journey. At these locations, creeks need to be crossed using vehicle ferries, adding around 15 minutes of waiting time for the availability of vehicle ferries. A very beautiful 0.5 km/0.3 m long bridge connecting Mayabunder and Diglipur is a pit stop point.

Diglipur Island is 185 km by sea from Port Blair and shipping services are available for more than 4-5 days in a week. The travel time is about 12 hours. Quality of ships, availability of cabin accommodation and quality of journey are not of the best standard as in Port Blair.

Attractions:

Ross and Smith Island

Ross Island (in Diglipur) offers a virgin beach bordered by a tropical forest. This island, at a distance of 20 minutes boat ride from Arial Bay jetty is an ideal spot for Beach, Adventure (trekking through tropical forest), Research / Education (like scuba diving, snorkeling, and turtle nesting),Wild elephants can occasionally be spotted. The sand bar joining this island with the adjoining Smith Island is an added attraction.

Smith Island offers a similar experience like Ross Island. This island also houses a small village of about 60 families. Eco rest houses are available for overnight stay. Turtle nesting during season is an added attraction.

Saddle Peak: 

A range of lush ever green forest territory with 13 indigenous birds species, 36 indigenous species of insects, and 6 species of indigenous trees., This location is a rich bio- diverse nature paradise. Saddle peak is popular for trekking and has nature trails through the evergreen rain forest. Although only being 732 meters above sea level, it is the highest point on the islands. Kalpong is the only river of Andaman islands which flows through it, and it has the very first hydroelectric project of the islands.

Raman Alfred Caves:

Mystical caves & majestic interconnections can be explored only if you are visiting Diglipure Island. A connected and separated chain of 22 caves, they are among the least explored and understood places, yet indeed they are among the most beautiful places on earth. You will have to contact local guides who will help you trek to Saddle Peak and Raman Alfred Caves.

Kalipur Adventure Sports Complex

Kalipur Adventure Sports Complex, near Kalipur Beach, was started in 2001. This complex offers water based adventure sports such as speed boats, water scooters etc.

Mud Volcano

A Mud Volcano has been identified at the northern tip of Diglipur Island. Little is known about the place; even locals lack knowledge. Visits by tourists are therefore difficult. Efforts need to be made in locating the volcano and providing facilities to access the same.

Ramanagar Beach

Ramanagar Beach, on the way to Kalighat, is another popular beach destination in Diglipur.

Kalipur Beach

Kalipur Beach, at a distance of 18km/11m from Diglipur, offers a combination of sand and rock shores with fishing village nearby.

Lamba Bay

Lamba Bay Beach borders the Diglipur National Park, leading to Saddle Peak. This beautiful beach has a stretch of shore covered with shells. At the end of this walk is a refreshing fresh water stream 'Thambu Nali' in the foothills of National Park.

Diglipur National Park

Diglipur National Park is a dense tropical forest housing a rich bank of exquisite trees, (including sandal), rare flora and wild fruits and offering trekking opportunities including climbing up natural steps formed by the roofs of old trees. Tourists need to take permission from Forest Department to trek through this Park.
A 740 feet climb leads to SADDLE PEAK, the highest point in Andaman and Nicobar Islands which offers an aerial view of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the second peak ICE DEGREE PEAK is the coldest point while the third peak provides a fantastic view spanning Diglipur to Mayabunder

Kalighat Creek

Kalighat Creek, on the way from Diglipur to Mayabunder offers a breathtaking view of the mangroves / equatorial forests.

Diglipur Island can be reached by Road, Sea and by Air.

By Road: It is is 330km by road ,morning bus services are available between Port Blair and Diglipur. Your Journey will start early morning from Port Blair. You will be travelling through the tribal reserved forest, Baratang Island, remote islands Rangat and Mayabunder. There are three refreshing breaks during the journey. By Sea: Diglipur Island is 185 km by sea from Port Blair and shipping services are available for more than 4-5 days in a week. The travel time is about 12 hours. Quality of ships, availability of cabin accommodation and quality of journey are not of the best standard as in Port Blair.

By Air: You can take a Helicopter service. The seat availability and schedule need to be checked. Travel time is around 2 hours from Port Blair to Diglipur.

 

At a mighty 732m above sea level, Saddle Peak is the highest point of the Andaman Islands. Taking approximately seven hours to trek to, the trail is well marked and passes through subtropical forests with mammoth trees. An easy trek, Saddle Peak offers incredible views of the archipelago. A permit is required to visit Saddle Peak and it is advised that plenty of water is carried. Saddle Peak National Park is famous for its marine life and vegetations.

Once at the summit of the peak, you can see the vast blue sea – Kalipur beach, Craggy Island, Lamia Bay – on one side and dense forests on another. You can choose between two trails, either through the beach or the forest. It is perfect for families and youngsters.

Brief Itinerary:

6:00am: Meet at the Kalipur beach by 6 am local time strictly so that you wont miss the magnifiscent view of sunrise at the backdrop of Saddle peak. From here one can easily see Saddle Peak straight ahead of you. This makes a great sight during the sunrise and a good start for the day. 

7:00am - 9:30am: Continue the walk for 15-20 minutes through the beach which is followed by a jungle trek.This jungle trek ends with sumitting the Saddle Peak. During the trek you will come across many fresh water streams flowing towards the coast.

Entire trail is properly marked by signs and you will come across a village inside the park as well. Complete trek from beach to Saddle peak is about 8 KMs most of which is an easy hike and there is a trekker's hut for rest as well on the way. On the way you will cross the 'East coast' view point which gives amazing view of the Craggy Island. After about 3 hrs into the trek you will reach the summit of Saddle Peak at 732 mts. 

9:30am - 2:00pm: One can spend some time there as picnic camp or near the rest points in between as the entire trip can’t be completed in a stretch

2:00pm: We start back towards the beach through the same way as wel came which will take 2-3 Hours depending upon the number of 'pic' stops taken by you 🙂

5:00pm: You reach back at the base where you are received.
